A rent comparison needs more than a headline.
In Seattle, Cascade Apartments at 221 Minor Avenue North advertised a one-bedroom, 667-square-foot apartment for $2,591 per month on a 12-month term, available 20 October 2026. Junction 47 at 4715 42nd Avenue Southwest advertised a one-bedroom, 643-square-foot apartment for $2,181 on a 12-month term, available 27 September. Those observations produce a $410 monthly rent gap, before other charges. [1] [2]
They do not establish a $410 saving for a particular move. The homes have different availability dates and specifications. Junction 47 also displayed a lower income-restricted price elsewhere on the page; using it without checking eligibility would change the question. A studio starting price at Cascade would not be a valid substitute for its one-bedroom price.
For a London comparison, Vertus listed one-bedroom homes at 10 George Street, Canary Wharf, London E14 9QG from £3,098 per calendar month, with advertised areas from 565 square feet. Quintain listed 343 Collyer, Canada Gardens, Wembley HA9 0SE, a 50-square-metre unfurnished one-bedroom flat, at £2,205 per month. Its availability field read 10/11/2026. One is a category starting price; the other is a particular listing. They are leads to investigate, not equivalent signed offers. [3] [4]
For each pair, request a quote for the same intended move-in date and length of tenancy. Record mandatory charges, concessions and what the rent includes. A free month and a lower monthly rate can have different cash timing even when the first-year totals match.
Compare the journey you would make.
Use Westlake Station as one common destination for the Seattle pair, and Waterloo Station for the London pair. These are chosen comparison points, not claims about where any resident works. Keep the arrival time and weekday the same for both homes.
King County’s C Line serves West Seattle, downtown Seattle and South Lake Union. That gives a route to investigate for the Seattle comparison; it does not verify the walk from either apartment, waiting time or arrival reliability. For London, use TfL’s planner to check each complete journey to Waterloo. We have not recorded comparable door-to-door planner results, so this article assigns no measured commute duration to the four listings. [5] [7]

These are checks of real transit connections, not journeys we have physically taken. No matched weekday 09:00 arrival comparison has been completed. A scheduled train segment would still omit access and waiting, so we have not substituted it for the tool’s invented door-to-door minutes.
Fare structure matters too. Metro’s published adult single fare was $3, and its monthly PugetPass covering $3 trips was $108 when checked. Twenty days with two separately charged $3 rides would be $120; the pass example is $12 lower. That arithmetic assumes the pass covers the journeys and ignores employer support or reduced-fare eligibility. It is not a quote for every route. [6]
In London, check the travel zones, time of travel, payment method and applicable caps. Do not simply multiply an isolated peak fare by every journey if a cap or season product changes the actual total. The mayor’s March 2026 fare decision is dated policy context; use current TfL prices for the journey you select. [8]
A lower rent can survive the comparison—or disappear.
The US tool example is deliberately invented. Home A costs $2,600 a month, with no additional fixed transport cost and $6 per commuting day. At 20 commuting days, its entered total is $2,720. Home B costs $2,100, adds $350 in fixed transport costs and $12 per commuting day, for $2,690. B is $30 lower, despite a $500 rent gap.
The UK preset is a separate invented exercise: £2,200 plus £9 a commuting day for A, and £1,800 plus £13 a day for B. At 20 days and no fixed transport charges, the totals are £2,380 and £2,060. The £320 difference is arithmetic under these inputs, not an observed London saving. Switching countries replaces the example; it does not exchange currencies.
Put a monthly travel pass in fixed transport costs and avoid also charging the daily fares it covers. For a car, decide whether you are comparing cash payments or wider ownership costs. Adding loan principal and depreciation together can double count part of the vehicle cost. Include parking, insurance and fuel consistently; do not assume every ownership cost disappears if you commute less.
Rent is one line. Affordability is the set of costs you would actually carry.
An extra hour is not an automatic cash deduction.
In the US example, A takes an invented 25 minutes each way and B takes 55. At 20 commuting days, B uses 20 additional hours a month. The tool shows those hours beside the $30 cash difference. It does not multiply them by a wage or call them lost earnings.
You may value that time highly without having a defensible hourly price for it. A journey can also be tiring, unpredictable or difficult with caring responsibilities. A single average cannot capture those conditions. Try the journey at the relevant time and record a range before making a commitment.
Hybrid work changes the arithmetic. Reducing commuting days cuts the variable fares and journey hours, while rent and a retained car payment remain. The annual figure simply repeats the entered month twelve times. It is not a prediction of holidays, office attendance, rent increases or fare changes.
Check the missing lines before choosing a winner.
Use written rent terms, actual transport prices and a consistent housing-cost scope. For renters, that may include utilities and locally applicable taxes or mandatory fees. A refundable deposit is money tied up, not automatically a recurring expense; moving costs belong in a separate first-year budget.
The four real listings make the exercise concrete, but a defensible ranking still needs matched terms and observed routes. Until then, use the tool to see which assumptions could change your decision. The useful result is a transparent comparison you can correct, rather than a cheaper-home label built on missing costs.
